Chena Masala Curry (Elephant Yam in Fried Coconut Gravy)


1.Elephant yam(chena)-200gms cubed
   Turmeric powder-1/2ts
   Salt
2.Shredded coconut-3/4cup
   Turmeric powder-1/4tsp
   Dry red chilly-5
   Coriander seeds-1tbsp
   Fennel seeds-1/2tsp
   Pepper corn-1tsp
3.Onion(sliced)-2
   Tomato(sliced)-1
   Ginger(chopped)-1tbsp
   Garlic(chopped)-3cloves
   Green Chilly-2
4.Coconut oil-1tbsp
   Mustard seeds-1tsp
   Curry leaves-2 springs


  • Cook yam pieces with turmeric powder and salt.
  • Heat a non-stick pan and saute , grated coconut, turmeric powder,dry red chilly,coriander seeds,pepper and fennel seeds.Fry it till the coconut becomes  brown. Let it cool for sometime.Add enough water to the cooled coconut mixture and grind to a smooth paste.
  • Heat oil in a pan and splutter mustard seeds.Add sliced onion,ginger ,garlic and green chili.It become soft, add tomato.When oil appears, add the ground paste, 1cup water and curry leaves.Cook covered on low flame for 5-6 minutes.
  • Add cooked yam pieces and adjust salt.Cook until gravy thickens.
  • Serve hot with rice.

  6. That's a nice dish with chena, I've had only fries, this looks so yummy, especially with the coconut oil seasoning..
